Backrooms Level

My very first level completed in Unreal; the goal of this project was to familiarize myself with the software and test out my level-design capabilities, with aesthetics built to resemble the internet-famous 'backrooms'. The level is divided into three sections: The first is built as an introduction, with more focus on the environment and set-dressing. The second area is pitch-black save for a slowly rotating light, taking place on catwalks suspended over a deep abyss, requiring the player to move carefully and pay attention to the room as the light passes over. The third area is a simple maze, decorated to make the environment difficult to navigate or memorize but without nauseating the player.

The project taught me a lot about Unreal's functionality, but also revealed a design flaw. The second area was deemed too dark by those who played the level, and it was recommended that the player have an area of visibility around them at all times to help make the room less disorienting. While I may have found the room concept engaging, those who played it found it more frustrating to deal with; highlighting the importance of playtesting.
